IPAS Shines at the 2024 AIP Congress

IPAS showcased its innovative research at the 2024 AIP Congress. Notably, two IPAS members were honoured with ANZOS prizes: Dr Erik Schartner received the inaugural ANZOS Jim Piper ECR/MCR Entrepreneurial Researcher Prize, while A/Prof Jiawen Li was awarded the ANZOS Mid-Career Prize for excellence in optics and photonics.

Wednesday Wonders : Exploring the scientific realms of glass in fascinating Science Talks

In November, over 200 attendees joined the Wednesday Wonders Science Talks at the 米兰电子 Botanic Garden, exploring the intersection of ancient glassmaking traditions and modern scientific innovations. The talks, part of the Chihuly in the Botanic Garden exhibition, featured researchers discussing the transformative potential of glass in technology. Topics covered included glass printing, quantum glass, microscale glass fibres for health and space applications, and the revolutionary ZBLAN glass, which has the potential to enhance communications, both on Earth and in space. The event brought together scientists, artists, and the public to explore glass's role in shaping the future of technology.

Thales Australia and the University of 米兰电子 have announced a partnership to develop a unique Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) aimed at countering battlespace threats, including fast-moving, low-profile Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). IPAS member Professor Miftar Ganija and his team are working on a mobile Counter-UAS solution, utilizing advanced local technologies. Professor Ganija emphasized the importance of transitioning USPL research from the lab to real-world applications, where innovation meets practical impact, particularly in the precision and speed provided by USPL laser sources.
