Coloured glass for a more sustainable future

Taking advantage of ANFF-Optofab’s glass manufacturing capabilities, Yunle Wei, Jiangbo Zhao and Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem at the University of Ã×À¼µç×Ó have invented a nanotech solution to impart warm colours into any oxide-based glass. Their GLAS technology employs non-toxic and biocompatible gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs). At the nanoscale level, gold NPs are not gold in colour nor are silver NPs silver. NP colour is a size-dependent property, meaning that NP size determines the colour that results. GLAS technology forms these NPs in a highly controlled way to obtain different particle sizes. By controlling NP size, GLAS technology can produce a broad, non-toxic, colour palette.

The ultimate maker space
Flawless Photonics’ ZBLAN optical fibres can only achieve their ideal theoretical performance if they are produced away from gravity’s influence. Which, of course, means we go up to space!
Director of the Optofab Ã×À¼µç×Ó Hub wins ARC Industry Laureate Fellowship

Congratulations to Prof Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem for being successfully awarded $3,359,464 ARC Industry Laureate Fellowship.Ìý
The four-year fellowship will be a valuable opportunity for Heike to collaborate with Flawless Photonics group to develop efficient purification methods for ZBLAN optical fibres. ZBLAN is a fluoride glass that has the potential to overcome the limitations of silica glass, which is currently used to make fibre optic cables. By developing ZBLAN fibre optic cables, there is the potential for longer-distance light transport and higher data transfer rates which can meet the increasing demand for faster internet and global connectivity.
